Vaccination against COVID-19 (2026-2027 season)
For 2026-2027, the Superior Health Council (SHC) maintains a targeted COVID-19 vaccination strategy for people at increased risk of severe disease.
For whom is the COVID-19 vaccine recommended?
The SHC recommends vaccination against COVID-19 for:
- People aged 65 years or older;
- Residents of residential care facilities;
- People with a weakened immune system, from the age of 6 months;
- People aged 50 to 64 years with at least one comorbidity;
- Pregnant women with a comorbidity or risk factor;
- Children and adolescents aged 6 months to 17 years with a risk factor;
- Household contacts of people with a severely weakened immune system;
- Healthcare workers with in direct contact with patients.
Healthy children, adolescents, adults and pregnant women are not priority groups, but may be vaccinated on a case-by-case basis after individual assessment.
When to vaccinate against COVID-19?
Vaccination can start in September, but is preferably carried out in October. The COVID-19 vaccine may be administered during the same visit as vaccines against flu, RSV, pneumococcal disease or zoster.
Which vaccine?
For the 2026-2027 vaccination season, an XFG-adapted COVID-19 vaccine will be used: Comirnaty and Spikevax from 6 months of age, and Nuvaxovid and Bimervax from 12 years of age.
This version replaces advisory report 9880 ‘Belgian Vaccination Strategy against COVID-19: Season 2025-2026’ from 2025.
