Vaccination against chikungunya (revision 2026)
Chikungunya, a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, poses a health risk to Belgian travellers.
The Superior Health Council therefore recommends vaccination.
Who should be vaccinated against chikungunya?
Vaccination against chikungunya is recommended for anyone travelling to a region with a high risk of infection. For travel to areas with a moderate risk, vaccination could be considered, depending on the duration of the trip, frequency of travel and underlying conditions. Travellers visiting areas with low-level circulation or localised small clusters do not need to be vaccinated.
Vaccination is also recommended for laboratory workers handling live chikungunya virus. People who have had a laboratory-confirmed infection do not need to be vaccinated.
Which chikungunya vaccines are available?
Two vaccines are available: Ixchiq® and Vimkunya®, both approved for people aged 12 and above. More information about the vaccines, including vaccine contraindications, can be found in the advisory report.
When should the vaccine be administered?
The chikungunya vaccine should be administered at least 14 days before departure.
This version replaces advisory report 9841 ‘Vaccination against chikungunya’ from 2025.
