Psychosocial well-being of elderly in residential care homes
Residential elderly care in Belgium is under increasing pressure. A growing number of residents in care homes are struggling with cognitive disorders and/or psychiatric vulnerabilities. This has significant implications not only for their quality of life, but also for the work of care providers.
In this advisory report, the Superior Health Council puts forward recommendations to improve the psychosocial well-being of elderly in care homes, with particular attention to those with
psychiatric or neurocognitive disorders.
The Council emphasises the importance of:
- systematic prevention and structural screening of mental health for every resident;
- person- and relationship-centred care and a holistic approach to care;
- active partnership with relatives in all aspects of care and the structural integration of the care home into the community;
- attention to the professional environment, including sufficient staffing, a supportive working environment and continuous training;
- a review of the administrative framework, recognition frameworks and labels for exemplary institutions, and investment in research and innovation.
This advisory report is only available in Dutch and French.
