The tiger mosquito in Belgium

The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is gradually establishing itself and spreading across Belgium, increasing the risk of local transmission of viral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. At the request of the authorities, the Superior Health Council evaluated the Flemish communication and response plan, which provides graduated measures adapted to different risk scenarios.

The Council concludes that this plan provides a scientifically sound and appropriate framework for public health prevention. In doing so, the importance of a proactive approach based on prevention, surveillance, early detection and rapid response is highlighted, in order to prevent the establishment and expansion of mosquito populations, reduce the risk of local transmission of viral diseases and limit the need for more intensive control measures.

The Council recommends that this approach serve as a reference framework for all Belgian regions to ensure a coherent, effective and equitable response, supported by strengthened cooperation between the regions and with neighbouring countries.
