Prevention of postoperative infections

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most common healthcare-associated infections and are associated with significant risks: prolonged hospital stays, increased mortality, reduced quality of life, and substantial financial pressure on the healthcare system. With this advisory report, the Superior Health Council (SHC) builds on new scientific evidence and previous guidelines (SHC 8573, 2014).

The advisory report provides a comprehensive framework to systematically prevent and control SSIs. It begins with clear definitions and an overview of the epidemiological situation, followed by the legal framework and recommendations for the training of all staff involved. A key chapter is dedicated to detailed recommendations on architecture and air handling in the construction or renovation of operating departments.

Attention is paid to the careful management of modifiable risk factors, which can be incorporated as perioperative preventive measures, as well as to recommendations regarding people flow, material circulation, environmental hygiene and waste management. The importance of active surveillance with timely feedback is emphasized, with a focus on monitoring various quality indicators.

In short: this advisory report advocates an integrated approach applicable both to traditional operating department and to interventional suites and independent treatment rooms used for ambulatory surgical procedures.

This version replaces advisory report 8573 ‘Prevention of surgical site infections in the operating department’ from 2014.

This advisory report is only available in Dutch and French.
