Recommendations on the radioembolisation of the liver

The Superior Health Council (SHC) publishes recommendations on the use of radioembolisation with radiolabeled microspheres containing yttrium-90 or holmium-166 in the treatment of malignant liver tumours.

At the request of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC), the SHC examines the roles, responsibilities, and training of the healthcare professionals involved, as well as radiation protection measures specific to unsealed sources. The national and European regulatory frameworks are also addressed. The report highlights the importance of the multidisciplinary tumour board, cooperation between interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians, and the involvement of medical physics experts. It recommends pre- and post-therapeutic dosimetry, the appropriate use of dosimeters, and analyses the situations in which hospitalisation is required for radiation protection purposes.
