Mental health of young children
The first years of life, from pregnancy to age five, are crucial for a child's development. Scientific research shows that this period influences later health, school performance, social relationships and productivity. Nevertheless, the mental health of young children remains underexposed in policy, both in terms of attention and funding. To change this, the Superior Health Council (SHC) has drawn up an advisory report that promotes the mental health of young children.
Key recommendations include:
- improving the living conditions of families and actively supporting parents;
- raising public awareness about parenting and child development;
- ensuring easy access to appropriate support, guidance and care;
- training professionals to recognise warning signs at an early stage
The SHC advocates an integrated approach across different disciplines and sectors, embedded in local networks that are close to families and promote continuity of care.
