Q fever in Belgium

The southern part of the Netherlands has experienced an epidemic of Q fever among humans in recent years. It is likely that the specific conditions on goat farms, combined with high population density, have played a significant role in the spread of the disease. As this combination of factors is not present to the same extent in Belgium, the risk of such an epidemic in our country remains limited.

Nevertheless, vigilance remains necessary, as Q fever can have serious health consequences. For example, during the Dutch outbreak, around 20 % of those affected had to be admitted to hospital. As the disease also occurs in Belgium, prevention and monitoring are important. Therefore, the Superior Health Council is publishing an advisory report on surveillance reinforcement, general precautionary measures, and specific measures to be taken when the disease is detected in goats and humans.
